From there, Property Tax Replacement Credits and Cap Credits are subtracted to arrive at the net amount due. This level of detail is available in the parcel search results and makes it possible to verify your own bill line by line. Historical tax data for multiple prior years is also available through the search tool.

How Orange County Calculates Property Taxes
Indiana law under IC 6-1.1-4 requires all real property to be assessed as of January 1 each year at market-value-in-use. The Orange County Assessor reviews parcel characteristics and comparable sales to set assessed values for every property in the county. That assessed value is the starting point for calculating your Orange County tax bill.
From the gross assessed value, deductions and exemptions authorized under IC 6-1.1-12 are subtracted to arrive at the net assessed value. The taxable net assessed value is then multiplied by the applicable tax rate (set in dollars per $100 of assessed value) to produce the gross tax. Property Tax Replacement Credits and circuit breaker cap credits are then applied to reduce the gross tax to the net amount owed. The cap limits homestead tax to 1% of gross assessed value, other residential to 2%, and all other property to 3%.
If a property owner disagrees with their Orange County assessed value, they can file a Form 130 appeal. The appeal window runs from when tax bills are mailed through June 15. The county PTABOA hears the case, with further appeal available to the Indiana Board of Tax Review. Rules for appeals are in IC 6-1.1-35.
Orange County Tax Bill Dates and Payment
Orange County sends tax bills in April each year. Spring installments are due May 10 and fall installments are due November 10. Payments can be made in person at 205 E Main Street in Paoli, by mail to the Treasurer's office, or through the county's online and phone payment options. Contact the Treasurer's office at 812-723-7101 for current payment portal details. Email for tax payments is treasurer@orangecounty.in.gov.
Late payments in Orange County are penalized: 5% for the first 30 days past the due date, then 10% after that. If taxes remain unpaid through a tax sale, the property may be sold for the delinquent amount under the process set out in IC 6-1.1-24. Owners who have questions about past-due taxes should contact the Treasurer directly before a tax sale is scheduled, since there may be options to resolve the balance.
Deductions for Orange County Homeowners
Several deductions are available to Orange County property owners who qualify. The homestead deduction is the most common and most valuable. It covers owner-occupied primary residences and includes a standard deduction plus a supplemental homestead credit, both authorized by IC 6-1.1-12. Applications go to the Orange County Auditor's office and renew automatically each year once filed.
Additional deductions include the mortgage deduction for properties with a recorded mortgage lien, the over-65 deduction for qualifying senior homeowners, the blind or disabled deduction, and several veteran exemptions including a full property tax exemption for 100% service-connected disabled veterans. Deduction applications must be filed with the Orange County Auditor by January 5 to affect the coming year's tax bill. Questions about eligibility can be directed to Sandy Hill in the Auditor's office at 812-723-7100, Ext. 100.
