Bartholomew County Tax Search Tool

The county uses the Beacon GIS platform from Schneider Corporation for online property tax lookups. Go to Bartholomew County's Beacon portal to search by owner name, parcel number, or property address. Beacon displays parcel data, assessed values, and links to tax bill information. It also has a map view that shows lot boundaries overlaid on aerial imagery.

A note the county includes in its tax records: the property tax information provided through the portal has not been officially certified, and final tax amounts are subject to change until the scheduled mailing date each spring. Use the portal for general reference, but confirm the final bill amount after tax bills are officially mailed in early April.

Paying Bartholomew County Property Taxes

The Bartholomew County Treasurer's Office is at the Governmental Office Building, 440 Third Street, Columbus, IN 47201. The phone number is 812-379-1605, and the Auditor's Office can be reached at 812-379-1600. Treasurer Barb Hackman leads the office, with Sandy Beatty serving as Chief Deputy Treasurer. Mark Stamper handles personal property and judgment accounts. Teresa Carson manages bankruptcy and tax sale matters.

Online payments go through InvoiceCloud at invoicecloud.com. You can also pay by phone at 1-844-278-9126. In the two weeks leading up to each due date, the county sets up payment locations at local bank branches, which many residents find more convenient than driving downtown. Accepted bank locations include Centra Credit Union, Jackson County Bank, First Financial Bank, German American Bank, and Horizon Bank. A 24-hour drop box at the courthouse gives one more option for those who can't get there during business hours.

Under Indiana law at IC 6-1.1-22, taxes are due in two equal installments on or before May 10 and November 10 each year. These dates do not change based on weekends unless a specific statutory exception applies.

Penalties for Late Payment

The county follows Indiana's standard penalty schedule. An installment not fully paid by the due date gets a 5% penalty for the first 30 days. After 30 days, an additional 5% is added. That brings the total penalty to 10% of the unpaid amount for accounts more than a month overdue. Interest continues to accrue on older delinquent accounts. Catching up before the account reaches tax sale status is always cheaper than waiting.

Property Tax Deductions in Bartholomew County

Bartholomew County residents can apply for standard Indiana deductions through the Auditor's Office, reachable at 812-379-1600. The homestead deduction is the most common. It applies to a property that is your primary residence and can significantly reduce the net assessed value. The supplemental homestead deduction adds further relief on top of the base homestead amount.

Other deductions available under IC 6-1.1-12 include the Over 65 deduction, the Over 65 Circuit Breaker, the blind or disabled deduction, and the Totally Disabled Veteran deduction. Veterans who are at least 62 with a disability rating of 10% or more may also qualify. Geothermal and solar energy system deductions are available for homeowners who have made those improvements. All deduction applications must be filed with the Auditor by January 5 to apply to the coming year's assessment. The homestead deduction stays active as long as you live in the home and continue to qualify. You don't have to refile each year unless your situation changes.
