The Indiana DLGF homepage below provides information on state property tax rules and oversight that apply to Scott County assessments and deductions.
The DLGF oversees property tax administration in all Indiana counties, including Scott, and publishes guidance on assessments, deductions, and appeals.
Property Assessment in Scott County
Scott County real property is assessed as of January 1 each year under IC 6-1.1-4. Indiana requires assessed values at 100% of market value. The Scott County Assessor uses market sales data and state valuation guidelines to set values for residential, commercial, and industrial parcels. Agricultural land uses a productivity formula rather than market comparables, which is set at the state level and applied uniformly across Indiana.
Appeals of Scott County assessed values start with a Form 130 filed by June 15 of the assessment year. The Scott County PTABOA reviews evidence from both the assessor and the property owner and issues a written decision. Further appeals go to the Indiana Board of Tax Review. The Scott County GIS system is useful for pulling up an aerial view of your property before an appeal, as it shows boundaries and can help identify any discrepancies in parcel data. State oversight under IC 6-1.1-35 gives the DLGF authority to review Scott County assessment practices and require corrections if needed.
Tax Payment Dates and Delinquencies in Scott County
Scott County property taxes are due May 10 (spring) and November 10 (fall) each year. Bills are mailed in spring and contain coupons for both installments. Send Copy A for the spring payment and Copy B for the fall. If you lose your bill, contact the Treasurer at 812-752-8414 for a copy. You can also look up your current bill through the DataPitStop system at treasurer.scottcounty72.us.
Missing the due date results in a 5% penalty for the first 30 days, then 10% after that. Extended non-payment leads to a lien and eventually a tax sale under IC 6-1.1-24. Scott County holds tax sales for delinquent parcels. Property owners have a redemption period to pay off the debt and retain ownership. The Treasurer's Office can give you a payoff figure at any time during the delinquency period. The drop box at the east side of the courthouse is available around the clock for check or money order payments, which can help you meet a deadline outside of office hours.
Deductions Available in Scott County
Scott County property owners can reduce their tax bills through deductions filed with Auditor Jennifer Rode Hamelman's office at 812-752-8408. The homestead deduction is the most common. It applies to a primary owner-occupied residence and includes a standard deduction and supplemental homestead credit under IC 6-1.1-12. When you buy a home in Scott County, the homestead deduction transfers to you as the new owner, but you need to file a new application. The Auditor's Office handles this and can confirm whether a deduction is already on file for your parcel.
Other deductions available to Scott County property owners include the mortgage deduction, the over-65 deduction with income and assessed value limits, the blind or disabled deduction, and veteran deductions. A 100% disabled veteran can qualify for a full exemption from Scott County property taxes on their primary residence. Surviving spouses of qualifying veterans may continue that exemption. All deduction applications must be filed by January 5 to count toward that year's bill. Indiana tax caps limit Scott County bills to 1% of assessed value for homestead properties, 2% for other residential, and 3% for non-residential parcels, applied automatically as credits.
